Nu Marcel de G.I. Joe Classified figuren aan de website heeft toegevoegd, probeer ik af en toe de boxart van een figuur erbij te zoeken. Vandaag ook nog nummer 25, Lady Jaye , met artwork door Scott Fisher. 🔥🔥🔥
Naast het toffe artwork en WIP beelden, deelde Scott Fisher ook zijn beleving bij deze opdracht. Het enthousiasme spat er zo hard vanaf, dat ik niet anders kon dan dit voor jullie in het Nederlands vertalen! 😅🥳
Ook deelde hij wat artwork van de Classified Series van andere artiesten. Ondanks dat ieder artwork apart behandeld wordt in ons magazine, delen we het voor de volledigheid toch maar met jullie. En zeg nu zelfs, het artwork is om van te smullen, dus neem het ervan. 🍻

YO JOE! Fisher's Full Circle-moment met G.I. Joe

Oh man… Als kind van de jaren '80 was G.I. Joe mijn ding! Ik heb het niet over de grote 12″ GI Joe met het pluizige haar en de kungfu-grip, ik heb het over de kleine Joes. Met namen als Destro, Cobra Commander, Snake-eyes, Scarlet en Lady Jaye!
Ik had de voertuigen zoals de VAMP.
Ik had de stripboeken, getekend door de fantastische Herb Trimpe.
Verdorie, ik heb nog steeds de Forward Observer Unit, in de doos, met de sticker van Toys R Us, nog geen halve meter verwijderd van waar ik dit typ. (Hoewel ik die helaas nooit heb verstuurd voor dat gratis Sgt Slaughter-figuur.)
Dus je kunt je mijn opwinding voorstellen toen Hasbro contact opnam en vroeg of ik geïnteresseerd zou zijn in het maken van boxart voor hun nieuwe GI Joe Classified-lijn. Dudes... Ik zei ja voordat ik de e-mail kon lezen! Ze legden uit dat ze samenwerkten met een aantal verschillende artiesten om verschillende visies op de lijn te brengen. Stripboekartiesten, posterartiesten, gamekunstenaars. Ik zou in fantastisch gezelschap zijn, zoals je hieronder zult zien.
Ze vroegen wie mijn favorieten zouden zijn om te illustreren. Wauw… Moeilijke vraag, maar ik moest eerst voor de dames gaan, Scarlet, Barones, Lady Jaye. Dan misschien SnakeEyes, Storm Shadow, Zartan, Roadblock, Cobra Commander... Ik kan nog wel even doorgaan. (En dat deed ik.) Als ik eerlijk ben stond Snake Eyes bovenaan mijn lijst, totdat ik besefte dat ik geen gezicht zou hebben om te schilderen!
Natuurlijk, en tot mijn verdriet, waren sommige van deze personages (waaronder Snake Eyes) al geclaimd door andere artiesten. Maar ik was heel blij met een mijn Top-Drie-Dames: Lady Jaye! Holy shit. Dat is een actiefiguur, met zoiets als mijn kunst erop. Wat!? Als die knul van de jaren '80, die gebroken armen en benen probeerde vast te plakken en terug te lijmen op zijn geliefde Scarlet, me nu kon zien. Het is volkomen surrealistisch.
Eén blik op die verpakking zal je vertellen dat het een interessante compositionele uitdaging was. Er is een doorzichtig plastic, stervormig raam waar ik omheen moest ontwerpen. We krijgen een kleine afbeelding van Lady Jaye op de voorkant en nog een lange verticale afbeelding van haar op de zijkant van de doos. Máár hier is het ding, dat beide afbeeldingen moesten samenwerken als één 18X24 posterafbeelding! Hier is de lay-outschets, zodat u kunt zien wat ik bedoel. Hasbro stond echt open voor mijn ideeën, en hoe cool is dit, ze stuurden me vergevorderde weergaven van de figuren zodat ik de uitrusting goed kon krijgen!
En hier is het uiteindelijke kunstwerk.
Maar ik ben zo'n fan van het merk, dat ik net zo opgewonden was om te zien wat de andere artiesten naar het feest brachten, als om mijn eigen werk. En mensen, laat me je vertellen dat ik vereerd ben om tot hen gerekend te worden. Bekijk de Badassery! Go Joe!

En we zullen eindigen met twee versies van de chrome bedreiging zelf, Destro, wat illustreert hoe open Hasbro staat voor samenwerking en om verschillende stijlen in deze lijn te krijgen. Ik hou van beide!

Er volgen nog veel meer artiesten en nog veel meer Joes in deze lijn. Ik heb zelfs nóg een kunstwerk voor hen gemaakt, voor een van mijn favoriete Joe's, maar alleen de tijd zal uitwijzen wanneer het voor het publiek kan worden vrijgegeven! Ga naar Hasbro Pulse om op de hoogte te blijven van het nieuws. Waar ze fantastisch werk leveren met voorvertoningen van wat er uit de pijplijn komt en interviews met artiesten! Dus nu weet je mensen! En je weet wat ze zeggen: "Knowing is half the Battle!"

Oh man… as a child of the 80’s G.I. Joe was my jam! I am not talking about the large 12″ GI Joe with the fuzzy hair and the kung-fu grip, I am talking the little Joes. With names like Destro, Cobra Commander, Snake-eyes, Scarlet, and Lady Jaye!
I had the vehicles like the VAMP.
I had the comic books, drawn by the fantastic Herb Trimpe.
Hell, I still have the Forward Observer Unit Accessory, in the box, with the Sticker from Toys R Us, not two feet from where I am typing this. (Though regrettably, I never sent away for that free Sgt Slaughter figure.)
So you can imagine my excitment when Hasbro reached out and asked if I would be interested in doing packaging art for their new GI Joe Classified line. Dudes… I said yes before I could even finish reading the email! They explained that they were teaming with a bunch of different artists to bring different visions to the line. Comic book artists, poster artists, gaming artists. I would be in some fantastic company, as you will see below.
They asked who my favorites would be to illustrate. Wow… tough question, but I had to go with the ladies first, Scarlet, Barroness, Lady Jaye. Then maybe like SnakeEyes, Storm Shadow, Zartan, Roadblock, Cobra Commander… I could go on and on. (And I did.) If I am honest Snake Eyes was at the top of my list, until I realized I wouldn’t have a face to paint!
Naturally, and to my heartbreak, some of these characters (including Snake Eyes) had already been claimed by other artists. But I was absolutely thrilled to be handed one of my Top Three- Lady Jaye! Holy crap. That is an action figure, with like, my art on it. What!? If that kid in the 80 who was trying to tape and glue broken arms and legs back on his beloved Scarlet could see me now. It is totally surreal.
One glance at that packaging will tell you it was an interesting compositional challenge. There is a clear plastic star shaped window that I had to design around. We get a small image of Lady Jaye on the front and another long vertical image of her on the side of the box. BUT here is the thing both images had to work together as one 18X24 poster image! Here is the layout sketch so you can see what I mean. Hasbro was really open to my ideas, and how cool is this, they sent me advanced renders of the figures so I could get the gear right!

But I am such a fan of the brand I was just as excited to see what the other artists were bring to the party as I was my own work. And folks let me tell you I am honored to be counted among them. Check out the Badassery! Go Joe!

There are many more artists and many more Joes coming down the line. In fact I did another piece for them for one of my favorite Joes, but only time will tell when it can be released to the public!
